Explore site-specific stories and characters in this laboratory-style performance workshop in Port Costa. Through physicalization, movement exercises and reflective writing, you’ll develop creative tools to interact with the world and the objects in it.

This workshop is for anyone interested in exploring a physical relationship to their environment, and finding the fun in everyday moments. No performing experience is necessary; aimed at participants age 15+.

This workshop is part of Idiot String’s residency in Port Costa sponsored by the Port Costa Conservation Society.

After the workshop, explore the wonderful and tiny town of Port Costa, where you can hike the hills, relax with a book, or discover whimsical artwork and fabulous antiques — making the whole day an invigorating experience.

Joan Howard (workshop leader) is a physical theatre performer and clown. She plays Thumper of Idiot String’s resident troupe, the Samuel Peaches Peripatetic Players, and is one-half of the acrobatic clown duo Max & Antoinette, who have appeared at San Francisco Theater Pub and the foolsFURY Factory Parts Festival. Joan teaches the next generation of professional clowns at San Francisco Circus Center’s Clown Conservatory, where she is co-director of a new social clowning program called ClownCorps. Joan also feels particularly fortunate to visit hospitals with the Medical Clown Project. She has performed with We Players and foolsFURY, and has presented original performances at Physical Theatre Salon at Main Street, LEVYSalon, Barbary Coast Amusements, Literary Clown Foolery, The Clown Cabaret, and Ei8ht. In 2010, she co-founded Main Street Theatre in San Francisco’s Excelsior district, an alternative performance venue dedicated to physical theatre and the variety arts. Joan studied clowning and pedagogy with Giovanni Fusetti of Helikos, is a graduate of Flying Actor Studio’s Physical Theatre Conservatory, and holds a BFA in Sculpture/Performance Art from California College of Arts & Crafts. She is the designer and builder of FluxWagon and co-creator of Idiot String.

A few weeks ago, I took some time after a weekend rehearsal to sit down with Rebecca Longworth and Joan Howard, the collaborative force that founded Samuel Peaches’ Peripatetic Players, winners of the 2013 Best of SF Fringe Award for “O Best Beloved,” a devised adaptation of Rudyard Kipling’s Just So Stories. Sprawled cross-legged on the mats at the Main Street Theater in the Excelsior, I got to know more about what drove them to start the company, the source of their passion for children’s theater, and why audience participation might not be something to dread.

SB: What in particular draws you to staging children’s literature, adapting them for the stage?

Introducing… Idiot String!

Hello, world! It’s us, Joan Howard and Rebecca Longworth. After a late night in early March, featuring edits to a Google Doc full of possible names, we’re “Idiot String.” Over a year after creating the Physical Theatre Salon and looking forward to the second iteration of our 2013 SF Fringe show, O Best Beloved… it’s about time to make this collaboration official. We look forward to surprising and delighting you with performances featuring a couple of idiots, and a lot of string (and rope, and pulleys, and hinges, and spinney things, and whirlygigs).

What’s an “idiot string,” you ask? A simple machine, of sorts. Of course.
